A beaker is not a measuring device. A volumetric flask calibrated *to contain* is not the same as one calibrated *to deliver*. Soda-lime glass will crack where borosilicate will not. None of these distinctions appear on a purchase order, and all of them show up later — as a failed calibration, a cracked flask on a hotplate, or a result a QA auditor will not accept.

The narrow neck is the point: a small volume error at the mark is a large error in a wide vessel. Features
Low thermal expansion (~3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹) means it survives the thermal shock that cracks soda-lime glass. Specify 3.3 for anything heated, autoclaved or used with strong reagents. ISO 3585 is the reference standard.
Class A carries roughly half the permissible error of Class B and comes with a batch or individual certificate. Regulated QC and NABL scope work needs Class A; teaching labs and rough preparation rarely do.
Borosilicate and polypropylene autoclave at 121 °C. Polystyrene and polycarbonate do not survive repeated cycles. We confirm the rating before supply rather than after a rack of tubes deforms.
Fired-on enamel printing survives autoclaving, brushing and detergent. Cheap screen printing fades within months, at which point the graduation is decorative and the vessel is scrap.
For validated methods we flag lot changes and can hold a rate contract against a consistent batch profile, so a consumable change never silently invalidates a procedure.

A workable starting set per bench: beakers in 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 mL; conical flasks in 100, 250 and 500 mL; measuring cylinders in 10, 50, 100 and 500 mL; volumetric flasks in 25, 50, 100, 250 and 1000 mL; a 25 mL and 50 mL burette; and GL45 reagent bottles in 250, 500 and 1000 mL. Buy Class A only where the number is reported or the method is validated — pharmaceutical QC, NABL scope, referee analysis. Buy Class B for preparation, teaching and any step where the volume is not the measurement. A laboratory that buys Class A across the board is spending two to three times more than the method requires on most of its glassware.
Glass for heating, solvents, precision measurement and anything entering a validated method. Plastic for hydrofluoric acid, strong alkali, field work, teaching laboratories and any bench where breakage is the dominant cost. Most laboratories run both and choose per task rather than standardising on one.
Glassware breaks at a predictable rate — track your replacement consumption for a quarter and order against it. Inspect for chips at the rim and star cracks at the base before the consignment is accepted — both are breakage waiting to happen under heat. Confirm the graduation printing is fired-on enamel, not screen print. For Class A items, confirm the certificate is present if you specified one.
Maintenance guide
Rinse immediately after use — dried residue is far harder to remove and some reagents etch glass over time. Wash with a laboratory-grade neutral detergent and a soft brush, rinse three times with tap water, then a final rinse with purified water. For volumetric glassware, water should sheet off the inner wall without forming droplets; droplets mean residual grease and an inaccurate volume.
Borosilicate 3.3 glassware and polypropylene labware autoclave at 121 °C. Loosen caps and closures before the cycle — a sealed bottle can shatter. Polystyrene will deform, and polycarbonate degrades over repeated cycles. Let glassware cool gradually in the chamber rather than removing it into cold air.
Air dry inverted on a peg rack, or oven dry below 140 °C. Never oven-dry volumetric glassware — heat permanently alters the calibrated volume. Store upright and separated so rims do not knock together; a chipped rim is the most common cause of a failed vessel.
Immediately on any chip, star crack or scratch on the inner surface — all are failure points under thermal or vacuum stress. Replace when graduations become unreadable, when a ground joint no longer seats, and when a Class A item fails its recalibration check.
Class A volumetric glassware is manufactured to tolerance and does not drift in normal use, but many quality systems require periodic gravimetric verification. Etched glassware, oven-dried volumetric items and anything that has been thermally shocked should be verified or retired.
Safety information
Chips, star cracks and surface scratches are failure points under heat or vacuum. Check the rim and base each time — most laboratory glass injuries begin with damage that was already visible.
Use borosilicate 3.3 for any heated application. Heating soda-lime glass, or any cracked vessel, risks sudden failure with hot contents.
Carry bottles and flasks above 1 litre with a hand under the base, not by the neck. Use a bottle carrier for solvents and corrosives.
Only use apparatus rated for vacuum in filtration and desiccation, and shield it. A thin-walled vessel under vacuum implodes rather than cracks.
A sealed container in an autoclave becomes a pressure vessel. Vent every cap and stopper before the cycle.
Use a dedicated rigid sharps bin for laboratory glass. Never place it in general waste where it will injure whoever handles the bag.
Hydrofluoric acid attacks glass and must be handled in PP or PTFE. Hot concentrated alkali etches glass and degrades volumetric accuracy over time.

For heating and general solution preparation, a borosilicate glass beaker 1000ml is a common bench size. Specify a low form beaker with spout for general mixing and pouring, or a tall form beaker where the taller profile suits the method. A conical flask 250ml is a common titration and culture size; use a flat bottom flask only where stable upright heating or storage is required. For a reported concentration, choose a volumetric flask Class A with calibration certificate when the manufacturer makes that documentation available for the selected item.
Specify the closure and light protection along with the volume. A reagent bottle GL45 uses the common GL45 thread; an amber reagent bottle wide mouth is suitable when easy filling and protection of light-sensitive material are both needed. For high-volume storage, ask for a square lab storage bottle GL80. BOD bottles 300ml are selected for the relevant water-testing method, while an aspirator bottle with stopcock is used for controlled dispensing of compatible liquids. Borosilicate 3.3 is a glass with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, around 3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹, manufactured to ISO 3585. That low expansion is what lets it survive rapid temperature change without cracking. It also resists most acids and solvents. It is the correct default for any laboratory glassware that will be heated, autoclaved or used with strong reagents.
Class A carries approximately half the permissible volumetric error of Class B and is available with a batch or individual calibration certificate. Class B costs less and is entirely adequate for preparation, teaching and any step where the volume is not the reported measurement. Use Class A where the number appears in a report or the method is validated.
TC or IN means the vessel holds the stated volume when filled to the mark — this is how volumetric flasks are calibrated. TD or EX means it delivers the stated volume when emptied, allowing for the film of liquid left behind — this is how pipettes and measuring cylinders are calibrated. Using a TC item as if it were TD introduces a systematic error.
Not for anything you will report. Beaker graduations are indicative and typically carry an error around 5%. Use a measuring cylinder for moderate accuracy and a Class A volumetric flask or bulb pipette where accuracy matters.
